Jeju Island in 48 Hours:
An Insider’s Weekend Itinerary

Back to Journal

Jeju (์ œ์ฃผ) is Korea’s volcanic island โ€” a green, wind-swept place with black-rock coastlines, tangerine groves, and a laid-back culture that feels worlds away from Seoul. Two days is not enough to see everything. But it is enough to see the best of it, if you plan smartly and rent a car. This is the itinerary most Koreans themselves follow when visiting from the mainland.

01 โ€” Getting There

The Flight Is Cheap, the Car Is Essential

Jeju has the busiest passenger flight route in the world โ€” Seoul Gimpo (GMP) to Jeju (CJU). Flights depart every 10โ€“20 minutes from early morning until late night. Book on the airline’s Korean-English site (Korean Air, Asiana, Jeju Air, T’way) directly for the best prices.

From To Jeju Typical Price
Seoul (GMP) 65 min flight โ‚ฉ40,000โ€“70,000 round trip
Seoul (ICN) 70 min flight โ‚ฉ50,000โ€“80,000 round trip
Busan 55 min flight โ‚ฉ35,000โ€“55,000 round trip
Busan Port 11-hour overnight ferry โ‚ฉ30,000โ€“70,000 (with cabin)

Rent a car before you arrive. Jeju’s public transport is limited โ€” buses run, but they stop early and routes skip many of the best spots. A rental car is essential for a proper 48-hour trip. An international driving permit (IDP) issued before you leave home is mandatory for foreign visitors. Compact cars start around โ‚ฉ50,000/day.

02 โ€” Day 1

West Coast: Beaches, Tea Fields, Black-Rock Shores

Arrive mid-morning, pick up your rental car, and head west. The west coast is where the beaches are clearest and the tangerine groves are densest. Base yourself near Aewol for easy access to both sides of the island.

  1. 1
11am โ€” Hyeopjae Beach (ํ˜‘์žฌํ•ด์ˆ˜์š•์žฅ). Powder-white sand, turquoise water, Biyang-do island floating offshore. One of the most photographed beaches in Korea. Free parking, lifeguards in summer.
  2. 2
1pm โ€” Lunch at Aewol (์• ์›”). The coastal road between Hyeopjae and Aewol is lined with seafood restaurants. Try galchi jorim (braised cutlassfish) or haemul-tang (seafood stew). Budget โ‚ฉ15,000โ€“25,000 per person.
  3. 3
3pm โ€” O’sulloc Tea Museum (์˜ค์„ค๋ก). A working green-tea plantation with a free museum, a full cafรฉ, and rolling rows of tea plants. The ice cream is famous. Admission is free.
  4. 4
5pm โ€” Sanbangsan (์‚ฐ๋ฐฉ์‚ฐ) Coast. Drive to the southern-west coast. Park near Yongmeori Coast for dramatic black-rock cliffs and a short coastal walk. The sunset here is unmatched.
  5. 5
8pm โ€” Dinner + stay near Aewol. Traditional guesthouses (pension, ํŽœ์…˜) start at โ‚ฉ80,000 a night. Book via Naver or Airbnb ahead of time โ€” Jeju fills up fast on weekends.

03 โ€” Day 2

East Coast: Sunrise Peaks & UNESCO Sites

Day 2 is for the island’s most iconic landmark: Seongsan Ilchulbong โ€” “Sunrise Peak.” Set an early alarm. It is worth it.

  1. 1
5:30am โ€” Drive to Seongsan Ilchulbong (์„ฑ์‚ฐ์ผ์ถœ๋ด‰). Sunrise Peak is a UNESCO World Heritage site โ€” a 180-meter volcanic tuff cone with a crater at the top. The 25-minute hike is moderate; the view at sunrise is the signature Korean postcard image.
  2. 2
8am โ€” Breakfast in Seongsan village. Local kitchens open for morning jeonbok juk (abalone porridge) โ€” a Jeju specialty. โ‚ฉ12,000โ€“18,000 a bowl.
  3. 3
10am โ€” Seopjikoji (์„ญ์ง€์ฝ”์ง€). A cinematic 15-minute coastal walk with yellow canola fields (in spring), a lighthouse, and open sea views. Used as the setting for several famous Korean dramas.
  4. 4
12pm โ€” Manjanggul Lava Tube (๋งŒ์žฅ๊ตด). Another UNESCO site โ€” a 1-km walk through one of the world’s largest lava tubes. Bring a jacket; it’s 11โ€“21ยฐC year-round inside. โ‚ฉ4,000 entry.
  5. 5
3pm โ€” Haenyeo Museum (ํ•ด๋…€๋ฐ•๋ฌผ๊ด€). A small but moving museum about Jeju’s famous women divers โ€” a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. โ‚ฉ1,100 entry. Allow one hour.
  6. 6
6pm โ€” Dinner: Jeju Black Pork (์ œ์ฃผ ํ‘๋ผ์ง€). Jeju’s iconic black-pig pork belly, grilled tableside. Best in Jeju City’s “Black Pork Street” (ํ‘๋ผ์ง€๊ฑฐ๋ฆฌ). โ‚ฉ25,000โ€“40,000 per person, well worth it.
  7. 7
9pm โ€” Return to the airport for late flights, or stay one extra night if your schedule allows.

04 โ€” When to Go

The Right Month Matters More Than Most Realize

Jeju has four genuine seasons, each with a different character. Your choice of month will shape your trip more than you expect.

Season What to Expect Verdict
Aprโ€“May Canola fields yellow, cherry blossoms, mild weather โ˜… Best time overall
Jun Hydrangeas in bloom, pre-monsoon warm Good โ€” beat the rain
Julโ€“Aug Hot, humid, crowded, occasional typhoon Skip if possible
Sepโ€“Oct Clear skies, cool evenings, golden reeds โ˜… Also excellent
Novโ€“Mar Cold but clear, tangerine harvest, low prices Fine โ€” bring layers
05 โ€” Insider Tips

What First-Timers Always Miss

๐Ÿ’ก Book Your Car Before Your Flight

Jeju rental-car inventory sells out on weekends, especially in spring and fall. Reserve your car before you confirm your flight. International-friendly rental chains include Lotte Rent-a-Car, SK Rent-a-Car, and KT Kumho.

  • โœ“
Bring cash for small vendors. Beach food stands, roadside fruit trucks, and smaller guesthouses often don’t take cards. โ‚ฉ100,000 in cash covers a weekend comfortably.
  • โœ“
Don’t try to climb Hallasan in 48 hours. The full Hallasan summit takes 8โ€“10 hours round trip. Save it for a 3-day trip.
  • โœ“
The weather changes every 30 minutes. Bring a light rain jacket even on sunny forecasts. Jeju is famous for having four seasons in one day.
  • โœ“
Use Kakao Navi, not Google Maps. Google’s driving directions are restricted in Korea. Kakao Navi works offline-friendly and is the app every local uses.
