If you are arriving in Korea for the first time, the T-Money card is one of the first things you should get. It works on virtually every bus, subway, and taxi across the country — and it saves you money every single time you use it compared to paying cash. Here is everything you need to know.
What Is the T-Money Card?
T-Money is a rechargeable smart card used for public transportation throughout South Korea. Think of it like an Oyster card in London or a Suica card in Japan. You tap it when you board and tap again when you exit — the fare is automatically deducted from your balance.
It works on Seoul Metro, all city buses, intercity buses, taxis, and even some convenience stores and vending machines.
Where to Buy One
T-Money cards are sold everywhere. You do not need to plan ahead or go to a special office. Just walk into any of these places:
✓ GS25, CU, 7-Eleven, Emart24 — any convenience store
✓ Seoul Metro station ticket machines and customer centers
✓ Incheon Airport arrival hall — buy one before you even leave the airport
✓ Price: around ₩2,500–₩4,000 for the card itself
How to Charge It
Charging (topping up) your T-Money card is just as easy as buying one.
✓ Any convenience store counter — hand over cash and tell them the amount
✓ Subway station ticket machines — select “T-Money 충전” on the screen
✓ Minimum charge: ₩1,000 / Maximum balance: ₩500,000
✓ The Toss app also supports T-Money top-up on compatible phones
How Much Does It Cost to Ride?
Seoul subway base fare is ₩1,400 with T-Money (₩1,500 cash). Buses are similar. If you transfer between subway and bus within 30 minutes, the transfer is discounted or free — this only works with T-Money, not cash.
Over a month of daily commuting, T-Money discounts add up significantly. It is not optional — it is how Seoul works.
Using T-Money in Taxis
Most taxis in Korea accept T-Money. Look for the T-Money logo on the cab window. Simply tap your card on the reader when you arrive at your destination. It is faster than fumbling for cash and avoids any awkward change situations.
What If Your Balance Runs Out?
If your balance drops below the fare, you can still ride — but you must top up at the next station before exiting. The gate will let you in but will hold you at the exit until the balance is settled. This is called “후불 교통카드” mode and is a common situation for newcomers.
Pro Tip: Keep at least ₩5,000 on your T-Money at all times. Top it up whenever you pass a convenience store — it takes 10 seconds. Running out mid-journey in an unfamiliar area is a headache you do not need.
T-Money vs. Other Transit Cards
You may also see Cashbee cards — these work identically to T-Money and are accepted at the same locations. Some credit cards in Korea also have a built-in T-Money function. If you have a Korean bank account, ask your bank about a T-Money integrated debit card.
Returning Your Card
When you leave Korea, you can refund the remaining balance on your T-Money card at subway station customer service centers. Bring your card and passport. There is a small handling fee of ₩500, but any remaining balance above ₩1,500 will be refunded in cash.
